John Chanqui was born in 1956 and sadly passed away in August 2006. He was a Mozambiquian, he lived and painted in Bairro Zona Verde village in Maputo, Mozambique.
He was the first born son and comes from a family of natural artists.
John was inspired by daily village activities of the market place, celebrating a good harvest, traditional beer making and initiation ceremonies.
John painted with oils on canvas. He used vibrant colours which brought his paintings to life. His technique was unique, his subjects were painted in a flat 'Chauke' (abstract) style lacking perspective very much like 'Naive art'.
John's paintings are sought after by modern art collectors from all over the world.
